The Compass Sport Trophy is a national inter-club competition for smaller orienteering clubs. The South West heat was held at Sallowvallets in the Forest of Dean and the winner enters the national final. There were four teams in the Trophy event with results SWOC (1268 points), SBOC (1258), QO (1185) and NWO (1146)
NWO fielded a team of 21 of which 19 finished and we had the required number (13) of point-scorers. It was therefore a really good team effort and everyone made a contribution.
Michael Reynolds (1st) led the CS Trophy field in the Men's Green.
John Orton and Chris Harrison achieved 5th and 6th places in the Men's Blue.
Nina Stimson achieved 4th place in the Short Green Veterans.
NWO works closely with both the Mid Wilts School Sports Partnership (SSP) and Swindon SPP to help plan orienteering festivals for schools. From three events in 2007 the programme has doubled to six planned for 2008.
This spring and summer Events will be held in Corsham, Calne, Chippenham, and Devizes on school sites. Orienteering maps have been produced for all the host schools and can be used by the schools in future for further activities. Two Swindon events will be held in public parks.
Teacher training is a key part of the SSP approach and British Orienteering courses to help teachers develop orienteering at their schools have been organised locally. Schools festival events are great fun for teachers and pupils alike and are an exciting way to build interest.
A new departure for 2008 is that one of the Swindon events will have an inter-schools competition format.
Membership has tripled in the last two and a half years. After our autumn Try-Orienteering events we now have more than 100 names on our membership list - 28 families and 25 individuals. These are split 75/36 (Senior/Junior) and 64/47 (Male/Female).
The event was held in West Woods, Marlborough amid the glorious colours of the autumn leaves. This was the largest event that our club has organised and brought in 540 entrants. A really great NWO team effort.

The National Trust property around Ashdown House now has a new orienteering map. The woods to the north and south of the house as well as the hillside on the road opposite are on the map. The house, its immediate grounds, local buildings and other areas are out of bounds.
After a successful event last year used a 1991 map courtesy of TVOC, NWO decided to produce an update for the night and day score events in March. We are grateful for the support the National Trust has given us.
